Yes. NoiseTape puts a controller in your menu bar: play or pause with one click or ⌘P, jump between your key sounds, set the sleep timer and watch its countdown right in the bar. The main window never has to be open.

Do I need to keep an app window open while it plays?

No — close the player window and playback continues. The menu bar item shows what's playing and how many minutes remain on the timer, and gives you full control without touching the window again.
