Thirty seconds of a fan, an air conditioner or rain against a window is plenty. Recording asks for the microphone with the browser's own noise suppression and automatic gain turned off — left on, they treat the fan you are pointing at as exactly the noise they exist to remove.

Everything happens in this tab. Your audio is decoded, looped and encoded by your own browser — nothing is uploaded, and there is nothing on our side to store it. Up to 60 seconds are used; longer material is trimmed.

02 — WHY MOST RECORDINGS FAIL

The seam is the easy part.

Joining the end of a clip back to its beginning is solved: fade the last quarter-second across the first with an equal-power curve and the wrap stops being audible. Every loop on this site is closed that way, and the same code closes yours. Judged on the seam alone, almost any recording passes.

What ruins a loop is repetition you can name. A recording of a room with a clock in it closes perfectly and is unlistenable within a minute, because you learn the tick's position and then wait for it. The same is true of a bird, a door, a car, a word of speech — the loop is technically flawless and the ear finds the edit anyway, because it is following the event rather than the texture.

So the check that matters is not the seam but how much the level moves across the clip. A fan measures almost flat. Rain on a window is close behind. A campfire is already past the line, and a recording with speech in it is far past. The threshold was set by measuring all 126 sounds in the NoiseTape library: everything broadband and steady sits under it, and everything that needed a loop point placed by hand sits above. When your recording lands on the wrong side, the tool says so and explains why instead of returning a file that sounds wrong for a reason you would have to work out yourself.

Does my recording get uploaded?

No. The file is decoded, analysed, looped and encoded by your own browser — the page has no upload path and this site has no server that could receive one. Everything the tool produces stays in the tab until you download it, and closing the tab discards it.

What kind of sound loops well?

Anything that stays the same from second to second: a fan, an air conditioner, a fridge, rain on a window, a shower, an extractor, traffic heard from a distance. What fails is material with events in it — speech, music, birdsong, a car going past, a ticking clock. Those close cleanly at the seam and then repeat the same event on a timer, which is more distracting than no loop at all. The tool measures this and tells you rather than handing back something unusable.

How does it pick which part of my recording to use?

It measures how much the level varies across every candidate start position and takes the steadiest one, skipping anything near the noise floor so it does not lock onto the quiet part of the room. That is what avoids the beginning and end of a hand-held recording, where someone is reaching for the phone.

Why can I only choose 5, 10 or 20 seconds?

Because a longer loop is not automatically a better one. Past about ten seconds you stop hearing repetition in steady noise, and every extra second is more material that has to stay steady for the whole loop to pass. Twenty is there for material with slow movement in it, like wind; five is there when only a short stretch of the recording is usable.

Why is the download a WAV instead of an MP3?

Because MP3 and AAC both pad the beginning and end of the stream. A file that loops perfectly as samples comes back from a lossy encoder with silence added at the wrap, so the hole you just spent the effort removing is put straight back in, once every lap. Ten seconds of stereo WAV is about 1.7 MB, which is the price of a loop that still works after the round trip.

Can I play my own loop in the NoiseTape app?

Not today — the app ships its own 126 recordings and has no import. The WAV is a normal audio file, so any player that repeats a track will loop it. Whether importing is worth building is partly what the pass rate on this page is meant to answer.
